In this short video you can see how to install the slats of the kalimba together with the two wooden strips and the metal rod of the bridge – just in case, if one of the slats should slip out of the bridge while tuning. The components are simply clamped together and it is not difficult to try it out by yourself. Please do not place the two wooden strips too close, so that you can better lever the slats over the metal rod with your fingers.
The kalimba is tuned with a small tuning hammer. The tones become deeper if you hit the slat from above with the tuning hammer and higher if you hit from below – thereby shortening the length of the slat. The tuning in this case is A-Minor, but you can of course try out other tunings.
I prefer to tune by ear, e.g. with the sounds of a piano, but you can also have the tones displayed by using a tuner or an tuner app. I use in this video the Pitched Tuner app (Android and iOS).
